The Copa America Centenario was a special edition of the soccer competition that was held between June 3 and June 26, 2016 in the United States. The tournament was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Copa America, the oldest international soccer tournament in the world.
Highlights
The tournament was won by Chile, who defeated Argentina 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the final. Chile had also won the previous Copa America tournament in 2015, becoming the first team to win back-to-back Copa America titles since Argentina in 1955 and 1957.
The tournament featured some of the biggest stars in world soccer, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar. Messi was the tournament's leading scorer with 5 goals, while Ronaldo scored 3 goals.
The tournament was a huge success, with over 1 million fans attending the games. The final was played in front of a sold-out crowd of over 80,000 fans at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
